Watched a speaker get shouted down at my college, then saw the same thing happen online a week later

It was a visiting professor talking about election security at our student union. A group just kept yelling over him until he left. Then I saw a video from a different school where protestors did the exact same thing to a student group tabling. Feels like the playbook for shutting down speech is getting copied everywhere now, you know?

It's not just a playbook, it's a tactic that works. They've learned that disruption gets more attention than debate ever could.

Yeah because nothing says "winning the argument" like throwing a tantrum when you don't get your way. It's the political version of a toddler screaming in the cereal aisle. They don't want a discussion, they want a spotlight, and any reaction, good or bad, just gives them more camera time. It's a cheap trick that works on people who only read headlines.

It's a great way to make moderators look justified.

Watching that play out in real time is rough, but then you see the same crowd doing it online and it just feels like they're following a script. My cousin's roommate got into a debate on Twitter about housing costs and three people jumped in with copy-paste talking points, no actual conversation, just noise. It's like they're trying to win by making sure nobody else can even finish a sentence, which is a weird way to prove your ideas are good.
