Found out my 'dark humor' joke about plane crashes was actually based on a real FAA stat

I was scrolling through the FAA accident database last night and pulled up the numbers for 2023. Turns out, 80% of general aviation crashes happen in good weather with no mechanical issues. I'd been telling this joke about pilots messing up in clear skies thinking it was just my imagination, but the data backs it up. Has anyone else found a stat that made a joke you tell feel way more grounded in reality?

I mean, it's a funny joke either way, doesn't really matter if a stat backs it up or not. Kinda feels like you're overthinking a punchline.

Man that hits pretty close to home for me. I've got a few dark jokes myself and sometimes you just wonder how much truth is lurking behind them. Finding out a stat backs up your punchline is a weird kind of validation, like you weren't just making stuff up for laughs. It makes the whole thing feel a little heavier but also more honest in a strange way. Definitely not overthinking it, just a moment of realizing the world is even weirder than you thought.

Honestly, amy_west kinda nailed it with the "doesn't really matter if a stat backs it up or not" part. Jokes are about the punchline hitting right, not about being fact-checked by the FAA database. But ngl, finding out your dark humor is actually grounded in real numbers just makes the joke hit different, like you're secretly a comedian and a statistician all at once.
