Hot take: my poker crew in Austin went from roasting each other to walking on eggshells in about 18 months
Back in 2023 we had a running bit where whoever lost a hand got their worst life decision read out loud, but after two guys got into it over a joke about one of their divorces, the group chat went from 200 messages a night to basically just scheduling texts, and now nobody jokes about anything real, so tell me, is a joke about your buddy's bad marriage still fair game if he laughed at it for a year and then suddenly didn't?
Once he stopped laughing, it stopped being fair game. That's the whole thing. A joke about his divorce only works if he's in on it, and the second he's not, you're just being a jerk about something that actually hurt him. My old crew had the same problem after one guy's meltdown, and we just quietly dropped the divorce stuff and kept the jokes about bad beats and bad golf swings.
