My sister's wedding toast bombed so hard I had to step in with a meme
Last Saturday in Cleveland at my sister's reception, her maid of honor got up and told this story about my sister's ex that was way too personal, like full on about their breakup text messages. The whole room went quiet, you could hear the clinking of forks stop. My sister was turning beet red and I could see she was about to cry, so I jumped up and yelled 'hold on, that reminds me of that meme with the confused dog and the math homework'. I pulled up a screenshot on my phone and passed it around, everyone laughed, and the DJ cut in with a song. It worked, but now I'm wondering if I made it worse by making light of a serious moment. Has anyone else had to rescue a family event with humor and then felt weird about it after?
Three years ago I would've said you ruined the night for sure, but watching my own brother's toast fall flat last month changed my mind completely. Sometimes a dumb laugh is the only thing that keeps everyone from drowning in the awkward.
