TIL the roast about my own hometown hits way harder than a generic joke about some other place
Last month at an open mic in Spokane I did a set where I made fun of a small town two hours away, and the room mostly shrugged. Then I tried five minutes about growing up in my own town, the weird traffic circle, the one grocery store, the high school mascot, and people were crying laughing. The difference was that the crowd could tell I actually knew the place instead of just dunking on it from the outside. My buddy Marcus put it well after the show: "You can make fun of something a lot harder when you obviously love it." Does anyone else find that local stuff lands better than punching at some random far away town, or is that just a Spokane crowd thing?
