A guy at a bar in Cleveland told me he lost his teaching job over a 10-year-old tweet about a movie.
He said the tweet was a dumb joke about 'The Godfather' that got dug up, and now he drives for a delivery app because the school board said it showed 'poor judgment', which seems like a crazy punishment for something that old and harmless, so has anyone else seen a case where the punishment just didn't fit the 'crime' at all?

Was the tweet even bad or just taken out of context? It feels like we're letting people get ruined over old jokes that nobody would care about today. This whole thing makes me scared to even have old social media, like they want everyone to have a blank past. Where does it stop if a ten year old joke can cost you your job?

That's brutal, man. What a stupid reason to lose a career over.

Honestly, it depends what the joke was. Some old jokes are just cringe, but some show a real mean streak. If it was hateful, that's not about having a blank past, it's about being decent. People should get a chance to grow, sure, but there's also real harm that can come from that stuff. The line gets drawn at causing harm, not just being embarrassing.
