Got dragged on Twitter for a joke I made at a comedy open mic in Austin last Friday
I did a five minute set at this small club on 6th Street. Made a sarcastic comment about a local politician and someone recorded it. Next morning my phone was blowing up with people calling me a bigot. I didn't even mean it that way but nobody cared about context. Has anyone else had a joke taken way out of line like that and had to deal with the fallout?

@laura_chen41 might be right but that kind of heat can kill a small comedy career real quick.

Oh man I been there. Just gotta lay low and not feed the trolls, they starve without attention. If you engage even once you bring the whole mob back for round two. Best move is to mute the thread and go touch grass for a few days. The internet has the memory of a goldfish so by next week nobody will care unless you keep stoking it. Your comedy will be fine just don't make the mistake of trying to explain yourself, that always backfires.

my phone was blowing up" - come on man, is it really that serious? People on Twitter get mad about literally everything these days. I feel like half the time they're just looking for something to be upset about. Unless you actually said something really out of pocket, odds are the mob moves on in like 48 hours. I wouldn't sweat it too much, just let it blow over and maybe don't peek at the replies for a bit.
