My 75-page apology draft got shorter after a friend read it out loud
Back in March, I got called out for a joke I posted in a private Discord that leaked. My first reaction was to write this long apology explaining my whole life story, like 75 pages worth of context. A friend read it and said it sounded like I was making excuses, so I cut it down to 6 sentences, no background, just owning it. That shorter version got less backlash than the draft would have, and it made me wonder if we've trained people to expect perfect, polished apologies. Has anyone else found that shorter responses defuse these situations faster than detailed ones, or did I just get lucky this one time?

idk, I actually think the long version might've worked better here if you had someone help you trim it instead of nuking it. The 6 sentence thing works when people just want you to shut up, but it can read as lazy or like you don't really get why it hurt. Maybe the real lesson is that 75 pages is always too much, but there's a middle ground where you show remorse without writing a memoir.
