Paid $400 for a defamation lawyer after a tweet about my old job got me dragged
So back in March I posted a dumb joke on Twitter about my old boss at a shop in Boise and how he ran meetings. Nothing wild, just a gripe about a guy who made us stand for 20 minute stretches. Two days later a bunch of accounts I never heard of started quote tweeting it, then someone found my LinkedIn and started posting my full name and my new employer. My new boss pulled me into a 15 minute call asking if I wanted to say anything. I ended up paying a lawyer $400 just to send two letters telling people to take down my address and stop tagging my work. Here is the thing nobody warns you about. The posts that actually hurt got zero pushback from the platform, but the lawyer letters worked fast and cheap. So now I'm out $400 because of a joke. Did I get off easy or did I just pay a tax for saying stuff online?
Had something like this happen to me a couple years back and honestly the lawyer letter was the only thing that actually did anything. Platforms don't care but people freak out when a real letter shows up. $400 to shut it down that fast is honestly a steal, most lawyers charge that just to pick up the phone.
