Rant: my own college cancelled me at a career fair for a hot take I posted in 2019
So last month I was at my alma mater's career fair in Columbus, Ohio, tabling for my current company. A student walks up, smiles, then pulls out his phone and shows me this screenshot of a tweet I wrote back in 2019 joking that group projects were just unpaid management training. I laughed, said yeah that was dumb, but he kept pushing, saying the school's DEI office flagged it during a background check on alumni participants. Before I could respond, my own school's rep came over and asked me to leave the booth because my post was 'a risk to institutional values.' I stood there in my company polo while three students filmed me packing up my brochures. My boss back at the office was cool about it, but the school sent me an email saying I'm banned from future career fairs unless I take their online free speech refresher course. That's the same school that had a professor fired in 2021 for teaching a novel with a slur in it. Has anyone else been cancelled by their own alumni network like this, or am I the only one dumb enough to post hot takes and then go back to campus?
