Got called out in a performance review for something I did for 3 years straight, was the write-up fair?
I worked at a small accounting firm in Dayton for about 3 years and every single month I would close the books a day or two late and just backdate the entries so nobody noticed. I told myself it was fine because the numbers were right and the client never complained. My manager pulled me into a review last Tuesday and slid a printout across the table with 11 late closes circled in red, and she asked me point blank why I thought the dates didn't matter. I sat there and couldn't say anything because she was right, I had been cutting a corner for 36 straight closes and calling it efficiency. Part of me thinks a written warning is fair since nothing was actually wrong with the books, but the other part thinks they should have flagged it at close number 2 instead of letting me build a habit for 3 years. I'm not saying I got canceled exactly, but my raise got frozen and now I have to decide if I fight it or just take the hit. Has anyone else been disciplined for something the boss quietly let slide for years before suddenly caring?
