Canned beans: I used to rinse them in a strainer, now I save the liquid and it bugs my wife
I used to dump a can of beans into a strainer and rinse them under the tap for a good 30 seconds, because that is what my mom did back in Toledo. Now I keep the starchy liquid in a jar and spoon a little back into whatever I am cooking, usually chili or a quick soup I throw together on Sunday. The liquid thickens things up so I do not need to simmer as long, maybe saves me 10 minutes on a pot. My wife thinks it is gross and calls the jar "the bean water" with a face, so I am curious what other people do. Do you rinse for the taste or keep the liquid for the texture, and does it depend on the dish?
