Noticed a weird trick with canned potatoes at the camp kitchen last weekend

I was at Rocky Gap State Park last Saturday cooking breakfast with a buddy who insisted on using canned new potatoes instead of fresh. He rinsed them, sliced them thin, then fried them in the same pan as the bacon before adding the eggs. The crust they got was way better than my usual hash brown routine, and it took maybe 7 minutes total. Has anyone else tried that method or got another quick canned potato move for camping?

Wait so we're really out here getting serious about canned potato technique? I mean I guess if you're roughing it at a state park with a camp stove and you don't wanna peel stuff it's fine but it's not exactly some kind of game changer. The bacon grease is doing most of the heavy lifting there honestly you could fry cardboard in bacon fat and it'd taste decent. I've tried canned potatoes before and they're always a little mushy inside no matter how you slice them, that crust is just the outside burning while the inside stays wet. For a quick breakfast sure but let's not pretend it beats fresh potatoes with some actual time and effort put into them.

Preach, @jadej50. Canned spuds are just sadness in a tin.

Honestly had a buddy try this last summer and he burned the crap out of them while trying to get them crispy. Ended up with blackened potato dust and a smoke filled tent.
