Appreciation post: My boss said 'nobody gets promoted before 5 years here' and I think that's a broken system.

I just got passed over for a lead role after 3 years of hitting every target, and I'm not waiting another 2 just because of an arbitrary timeline... has anyone successfully argued against a policy like this?

Honestly that rule keeps things fair for everyone. It stops favorites from jumping the line just because they're loud.

True, @jordancarr. I used to hate it but you're right.

My buddy was in the same spot at his old job. He made a list of all the extra projects he led and how much new business he brought in, then asked for a meeting with his boss and the boss's boss. He basically said the rule was costing them good people, and he had an offer in hand. They ended up making a special title for him right then to keep him. It was a huge risk but it worked.

Read a case where someone showed their work saved the company money to break that rule.
