I kept getting passed over for promotions until a manager in Austin pointed out my one big mistake

For two years, I just did my job and waited for my boss to notice. At a conference in Austin, a manager from another team told me flat out, 'You're great at your tasks, but I have no idea what you actually want to do next.' That hit me... I never actually told anyone my goals. Has anyone else had to learn to speak up about their career path?

Honestly that sounds like a cop out from management. If you're doing good work they should notice and come to you. It's their job to spot talent, not your job to constantly sell yourself. I got my last raise because my boss saw I was reliable, not because I gave some speech about my dreams. Maybe the problem is companies don't value quiet workers anymore.

Watched a friend get passed over for a promotion three times because he just kept his head down and worked hard. His boss finally told him they needed to "hear his voice more" and see him "own his wins." He had to start sending weekly emails listing what he did, which felt stupid to him, but it worked.

But is it really that big a deal to send a weekly email? I get that it feels like extra work, but if that's the game everyone else is playing, you kinda have to play it too. It's less about selling yourself and more about making sure your work doesn't get lost in the noise. Managers have a lot going on, and sometimes they just need a simple list to remember who did what.
