I used to think you had to take every promotion offered to you
For years, I said yes to every step up, like moving from a senior analyst to a team lead in 2021. That role added a 15k bonus but also 20 hours of weekly meetings and constant people problems. I stepped back down after eight months because I missed the actual work. Now I ask if a move gets me closer to the work I want to do, not just a bigger title. Has anyone else turned down a promotion and been glad they did?

@gibson.morgan stepping back shows real work matters more than a title, right?

Honestly, it's kind of wild how much we get told that the next promotion is the only way to prove we're doing something worthwhile. Ngl, once you start noticing that most of the people chasing titles are actually just chasing stress and a bigger paycheck, the whole thing feels less appealing. Tbh, the pattern I see is that real satisfaction usually comes from doing good work and having control over your time, not from having a fancier name on your email signature.

How did you realize that was the right move for you? I always thought climbing the ladder was the only way to succeed. Your story really makes me see it differently. It sounds like you got your time and happiness back by focusing on the work you enjoy. That seems way more important than just a title. I might start asking myself that same question before jumping at the next chance.
