I was at a conference in Atlanta last year and a speaker's simple question changed my whole job search.

I was listening to a panel about tech hiring, feeling pretty lost after sending out over 50 applications with no real replies. One speaker, a hiring manager from a mid-sized firm, stopped her talk and asked the room, 'How many of you are just applying to jobs you think you should want?' I realized I was doing exactly that, chasing titles and salaries listed online. She told us to spend one week only looking at the actual day-to-day tasks in a job post, and ignore the fancy title completely. I tried it, and it turned out I was much better suited for 'Implementation Specialist' roles than the 'Project Manager' jobs I was fighting for. The work sounded more like my skills. Has anyone else made a big switch in what they apply for based on the real work, not the label?

Interesting, but I've found the exact opposite. The title usually tells you everything about the pay and respect you'll get.

Remember the title is just for show, but the work is what you do all day.

But isn't the title what everyone sees on LinkedIn?
