Mapped out my whole job search backwards for 6 months before someone pointed out the obvious

I was spending hours tailoring each resume to match job descriptions perfectly. A recruiter at a career fair in Austin told me I was wasting time because the ATS systems scan for keywords, not perfect formatting. She showed me her own resume that just listed the exact phrases from the postings she applied to. Has anyone else found that simpler resumes actually get more callbacks?

That thing about "perfect formatting" hits hard. I used to do the same thing with fonts and layouts until a buddy who worked in HR told me the ATS just looks for the exact words. Now I just copy key phrases from the job posting into my resume and call it a day. Way more callbacks, way less stress.

Stop copying entire phrases verbatim from job postings. The ATS might pick up on that and flag you as a lazy applicant. I've seen it happen. Instead, take the main keywords and rewrite them into your own sentences that still match what the job needs. So if they list "project management experience," you say something like "Managed multiple projects from start to finish" instead of just pasting "project management experience." It still gets through the system but looks way more natural to a human reader. Also, keep your formatting simple like plain text, but don't go overboard with copying. A mix of smart keywords and real context works better than just a list of phrases.
