My old boss said to never negotiate salary for my first cleaning contract, and I lost about $200 a month for a year.
He said it would build goodwill, but the client just saw it as my set rate. Has anyone else had a 'don't negotiate' rule backfire?

My buddy's first freelance gig was for a friend of a friend. They told him not to haggle over the design fee to keep things friendly. Fast forward six months, he found out the client was bragging about getting a "cheap rate" and refused any increase. He basically trained them to undervalue his work from day one.

Totally get that. Watched a cousin do the same thing with her photography, gave a huge "friends and family" discount on a wedding package. The couple ended up sending all their friends her way expecting the same crazy low price, and it took her a year to dig out of that hole. Setting that first price really does stick in people's minds forever.

Hate seeing talented people get trapped like that, it's such a hard lesson to learn.
