Picked a small local firm over a big name for my first job out of school.

Everyone said I was crazy to turn down the big company's offer for a place with only 15 people in Cincinnati, but I wanted to learn more than just one small job. After a year, I've worked on projects from start to finish and my boss just asked me to help train a new hire. Has anyone else made a similar choice and how did it work out for you?

Look at the actual work you are doing, not just the name on the door. Getting to see whole projects is huge for learning. EmmaM89 has a point about big names, but that door swings both ways and small places give you real skills fast. Sounds like you are already proving your choice was right by training someone new.

Big names open doors you might not find later.

True, but @emmam89, those doors can be pretty heavy.

Yeah I read an article the other day about how people at smaller shops end up wearing way more hats and learning faster. Shane_park92 nailed it about seeing the whole project, that's huge. At a big name place you might just be doing one tiny piece over and over. But the training someone new thing you mentioned is legit too, that shows your work is trusted. The name on the building won't teach you how to fix a problem when you're the only one around who can.
