Pro tip: My uncle who fixes printers told me to stop chasing job titles and start chasing skills that stick

He said he turned down a manager gig 15 years ago because he didn't want to lose his hands-on repair work, and now he's the only guy in town who can fix those old industrial printers that everyone else forgot about, making double what the managers do - has anyone else turned down a promotion for peace of mind?

Peace of mind" is underrated. I passed on a supervisor role to weld.

Most people climb the ladder just because that's what you're supposed to do, then wake up one day wondering why they're miserable. There's something to be said for knowing your limits and what actually makes you happy long term. A friend of mine turned down a management position at a warehouse and stayed on the floor, and he's the only one in that whole place who doesn't dread coming to work. Sometimes the best career move is just keeping your peace.
