Spent $800 on a 'career coach' website package and it was a total flop
Back when I first went solo, I figured I needed a fancy site to look legit, so I paid for a package that promised SEO and client leads. It looked slick but never brought in a single job, not one. The guy just used a template and never asked about my actual work. Anyone else get burned by a service that promised the world but delivered nothing?

Ever wonder if they sell the same generic package to everyone? It sounds like they just plug in a new name without caring what you do. That's why a real person always beats a template.

That's a rough way to learn. I had a similar experience before just building my own simple site. Focusing on a clear message about who I help worked way better than generic SEO promises.

Yeah, I used to chase those generic SEO tricks too. @aaronsullivan is right that a clear message for a specific group just works better. It saves so much time and actually brings in the right people.

Totally feel that. I wasted months trying to rank for every keyword under the sun before I just said screw it and wrote my site for one type of client. My traffic went down at first, but the people who did show up were actually ready to talk. It's way less stressful to just speak directly to the people you want to work with.
