Staying out of office chats left me without support when I needed it most

I always ate lunch at my desk and skipped casual talks with coworkers. I figured my good work would speak for itself. When our company had budget cuts, my name was on the list. My boss said they kept people who were more connected to the team. I had no one to vouch for me or share projects. Now I join coffee breaks and ask about people's days. It makes a huge difference in being seen as part of the group.

Good work should be the real measure.

Exactly. Too many places focus on hours logged or fancy job titles instead of what actually gets done. The quality and impact of the work should always come first. When you judge by anything else, you end up rewarding people who are just good at looking busy. It's the only way to build something that actually lasts.

Believed for years that face time at the office was key to getting ahead. But then I saw a coworker who always left on time but her projects always turned out perfect. She never stayed late, but her reports were so good they became the standard for our team. Meanwhile, the guy who bragged about working weekends kept making mistakes that set us back. Now I get that real results beat just looking busy any day.

Totally agree. I started tracking my actual wins, not my hours. Made a huge difference in how my boss saw my work. Now I focus on finishing strong, not just staying late.
