Got roasted for my miter cuts on a custom bookshelf job

Client's dad, a retired cabinetmaker, pointed out my saw fence was off by a hair. He said 'kid, you're fighting your own tools.' Checked it with a precision square, and he was totally right. Anyone else have a simple trick for keeping a miter saw fence dead-on?

Forget the pencil line, just use the square itself.

Check it with a square before every big job. That old guy saved you a world of trouble.

Yeah, and maybe even mark the sweet spot with a pencil line.

That pencil line trick is solid. I actually took it a step further on my saw. I put a tiny piece of blue painter's tape right along the fence where the square says it's perfect. Then I drew my line on the tape. If the fence ever gets bumped, I can see right away because the line on the tape won't line up with the saw table anymore. It's a quick visual check without even grabbing the square. The tape doesn't get in the way and you can replace it when it gets dirty.
