I switched from 16d nails to 10d on a fence job in Salem and now I can't decide if I was wrong
Last month I framed a 60 foot privacy fence in Salem and ran out of 16d nails halfway through the second section. The lumber yard was closed so I grabbed a box of 10d from the truck and just kept going. The 10d shot faster and split way less cedar, and the rails felt just as solid when I leaned on them. Now I'm stuck: my old boss told me 16d or nothing on anything structural, but this fence came out cleaner than the last one I built the "right" way. So is the nail size thing mostly habit, or am I going to get a callback in two winters when it racks? Curious if anyone here has run 10d on rails long term and how it held up.
