Pocket holes on my new bench are splitting like crazy, y'all have a fix?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I totally thought pocket holes were foolproof for years, never had an issue. Then I built a shelf with some dry oak and the splits were BAD. What fixed it for me was switching to a shorter screw and going slower with the drill. Like, on that oak, I used the long ones and it just pulled the wood apart. Now I match my screw length to the wood thickness every time. Works like a charm now.

Doubt it's that serious, @cora_kim39. My pocket holes usually hold up fine without splits. Maybe you just had some extra dry wood or something.

Pocket holes are the overconfident handyman of joinery. They promise a quick marriage between two boards, then leave you with a bench leg that looks like it got in a fight with a hammer. Nothing like watching your "strong and simple" joint slowly tear itself apart because the wood decided to be dramatic. My last project had splits so bad I could fit a credit card in them. Really makes you appreciate the quiet dignity of wood glue.

What if the splits are actually a good thing? I've seen tight pocket holes squeeze the wood so much it stresses the grain over time. A small split right away might just be the wood finding its natural relief point. My old workbench has a few hairline cracks around the screws and it's rock solid, hasn't moved in years. Sometimes letting the material breathe a little beats forcing a perfect seal that fights the wood's nature.
