Saw some really odd framing in a new build over in Springfield

I was helping a friend check out a house he was thinking of buying last week. In the attic, the roof rafters were all toe-nailed with just two 8d nails at each joint, no hurricane ties or metal connectors anywhere. The whole crew there swore it was 'the old way' and just as good. How is that even up to code now? Has anyone else run into this kind of work lately?

The old way" is why we have so many old houses that aren't standing anymore.

Sounds like they're cutting every corner they can. I'd get a real inspector out there before your friend signs anything.

Hold up, inspectors miss stuff all the time too. My cousin's place passed inspection but they still had a huge mold issue behind the drywall. Sometimes you gotta trust the builder's rep and the warranty. A lot of these new methods are actually way stronger and more energy efficient than the old stick frame stuff.
