Wasted $40 on a cheap chisel set from the hardware store

Bought a 4-pack of no-name chisels for $40 and spent more time sharpening them than actually using them. Anyone else learn this lesson the hard way or am I just cheap?

Oh man, that hurts worse than a dull chisel! I mean, I get the temptation to save some cash, but those cheap sets are honestly just frustrating. The steel is usually super soft so it dulls fast, or it's too hard and chips like crazy. I ended up tossing my first set after a week and just buying one decent chisel for like $20. It's way better to have one good tool than four bad ones that just make you angry every time you use them.

Depends on what you're doing with them though, right? I've got a cheap set I've been beating on for years and they still get the job done for rough work.

Really curious if it actually matters that much in the long run though. Half the time my cheap chisels just need a quick sharpen and they're fine for what I'm doing. Maybe I'm just not picky enough to get worked up over it lol.
