Watched a guy at the lumber yard in Reno eyeball a cut instead of pulling out his tape, and it hit me why my dad's old square is still in my truck

Something my dad told me years ago stuck with me. He said the tape is for checking your work, not for doing the work. Once you've cut enough boards by eye, your hand knows where the mark is before your brain does. It sounds like some old timer nonsense until you try it and your cut comes out dead on. Maybe the guy in Reno was just being lazy, but maybe he earned it too.
