Customer griped about my seams and I had to change my whole approach
Last month I put in a nice plush carpet for a lady in Oak Park. She called me back saying she could see every seam in the afternoon light. I was pissed at first but then I walked in and looked at it from her angle and yeah, she was right. I had been cutting my seams with a straight cut like I always did for 8 years. Now I do a slight taper on seam edges so they blend better. The difference is night and day and I haven't had one complaint since. Any of you guys switched up your seam method because of a customer's feedback?

My neighbor over in Berwyn had the same issue with her living room carpet back in 2017. I got called in to look at it and sure enough, the afternoon light hit those straight seams like a spotlight. @blakestone, seams are definitely not just seams once you see what a good taper can do. I switched to taping my seams at a slight angle and it made all the difference, especially with the thicker carpets. It takes a little more time but the finished look is so much cleaner and nobody spots the seams anymore.

Oh man, that taper trick is golden. I actually learned something similar from a boat upholstery guy of all people, he was telling me how they feather edges on vinyl so it doesn't wrinkle under tension. Same principle. It's funny how one cranky customer can totally reset your whole approach. I've had that happen with a few things over the years where I thought I was doing it right and then somebody with a sharp eye (or, you know, a specific lighting situation) calls me out. Makes you humble real quick. Glad the taper worked out for you, that's one of those fixes that just feels like cheating once you see it.
