Drove through Omaha last week and saw some of the worst carpet seaming I've ever come across

I was visiting family in Omaha and stopped by a new build development a buddy is working on. I'm talking brand new houses, maybe 30 of them, and the carpet installs looked like they were done by someone who learned the trade from a YouTube video watched on mute. Every single seam was puckered up like a bad haircut, and I could see gaps between the pieces wide enough to stick a quarter into. The pattern matching on the textured stuff was off by at least half an inch in most rooms. My buddy told me the builder hired some crew out of council bluffs for $0.60 a square foot, which is just insulting for any kind of quality work. I mean seriously, who seams a bedroom with the grain going opposite directions? Has anyone else seen a whole subdivision get carpeted this bad or is Omaha just having a rough year?

That whole development sounds like a real mess, I feel for your buddy dealing with that.

Man, that's a rough situation. Your buddy needs to start documenting every single conversation and email from this point forward. If there's no written trail, it's their word against the other guy's, and that never ends well. First thing is to check if there was any kind of contract or written agreement, even a text message chain that spells out the deal. If not, they might have to take the loss and learn a hard lesson about getting everything in writing. Offer to sit down with them and help draft a timeline of events, it's boring but it forces them to think through what actually happened.

Exactly this. Getting a clear timeline down on paper makes it way easier to spot where the story falls apart or where they might actually have some leverage.
