Finally got that weird angled stair in the old house on Elm Street to lay flat after fighting with it for a full afternoon.

The treads were all different depths and the risers were bowed, so I had to scribe and trim each piece individually, which took about five hours when I'd only budgeted one.

Didn't I read that's how they built all stairs back then?

Scribing each piece is the only way with old stairs like that. I had to do the same thing on my back porch steps last year, and it was a long day of measuring and trimming. Getting them to finally sit flush is such a good feeling after all that work.

Feel your pain, @roberts.leo. That flush fit is worth every minute of the struggle.

Whoa, I actually see it a bit different than you @roberts.leo. Old stairs settled so much over time that scribing can sometimes make gaps worse if you don't account for the house shifting in other spots. I've had better luck with a straightedge and a sharp pencil to find the high points before I even touch the saw.
