Got roasted for my seam technique and it actually helped a ton
I had a job last month at this big house in Phoenix and the homeowner was a retired carpet guy himself. He watched me doing a seam and just said 'kid, that looks like a railroad track waiting to happen.' I was kinda pissed at first but he showed me how he used to run a heat iron along the tape then roll it with a carpet roller going sideways instead of straight. I tried it on the next bedroom and the seam literally disappeared. No more lumpy lines that you can feel through socks. Been doing it that way ever since and my work looks way cleaner. Has anyone else had an old timer call them out on something you thought you had down?

Funny how it takes someone who's been doing it since before you were born to point out the obvious stuff you're totally blind to. @gray875 nailed it - those people are a gift, even if it stings at first.

Guys like that have a way of making you realize what you thought was good work really wasn't.

Oh man, I feel that one deep down. I had a boss once who could just look at my spreadsheet and in five seconds point out three things I spent all week thinking were perfect. It stung, but he was right every single time. Made me realize I'd been coasting on work that was just okay when I thought I was killing it. Those people are rare, and honestly kind of a gift, even if it hurts your pride a little.
