Had a customer point out my seams were too wide on a living room job last month

I always thought a 1/4 inch gap was fine for seaming tape, but this guy pulled out a ruler and showed me his old carpet had no visible seams at all. He was right - my seams were way too loose, so now I run them at 1/8 inch max with better glue spread. Anyone else get schooled by a homeowner on something you thought you had down?

That 1/8 inch max sounds right but I'm stuck on him having a ruler with him. Who brings a ruler to check carpet seams? I've been doing this work for eighteen years and never once had a customer break out measuring tools on my finish work. Makes me wonder what else he was inspecting.

yeah that ruler thing threw me too at first but honestly I kinda respect it now. like he cared enough to actually check and he was right, my seams were sloppy. I bet he was the type to inspect every little thing though, probably drove his contractors nuts but at least he knew what he was talking about. it stings to get called out but honestly that's the kinda feedback that sticks with you and makes you better. I still think about that guy every time I tape a seam, no joke.

Just started keeping a notebook with measurements after getting burned on a tile job a few years back. Caught a couple mistakes before they became problems that way. Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way that double checking isn't personal, it's just smart.
