I finally tried double-tacking stairs with the strip cut in half, and now I can't decide if it's worth the extra time
I had a set of 14 stairs in a rental in Cleveland that kept popping along the nose about 8 months after the last install, so on the redo I cut the tack strip down the middle and ran a half-width piece right at the nose on every tread. It held great through a full winter of boots and no callbacks, but it added almost 40 minutes to the job and my helper says I am just doing extra work for nothing. Do you all double-tack the nose or do you think a good stretch and proper knee kicker work holds just as well?
Does your helper do the stretching or just the install? If he is the one stretching, then maybe make him do the nose tacking too so he feels that 40 minutes on his own knees. That is the real test, because a fresh stretch will hide a weak nose for a few months and then it pops right when you are on to the next job.
