Old guy at the hardware store changed my mind about seam rollers

Was grabbing a new blade at Ace last week. This retired installer, Frank, saw my cart. He said 'You still using that plastic roller, kid?'. Told him yeah, for years. He shook his head. Said he switched to a full metal one in '92. Never had a seam pop. Bought a heavy duty one that afternoon. Used it on a job in Springfield yesterday. The difference is real. What's one tool you all were using wrong for way too long?

Frank's advice is solid, but a seam popping usually has more to do with the prep work (like the adhesive) than just the roller.

Disagree, @sanchez.mary. A weak roller can absolutely cause that.

Rollers are one of those things nobody thinks about until it's too late. My cousin spent a whole weekend laying down sheet vinyl in his kitchen, used a brand new roller from the hardware store that felt fine but was actually kinda soft. He had these little bubbles show up after a week right where the roller passed over. Ended up having to rent a heavy floor roller from a tool place and redo those sections. You'd think a roller is just a roller, but that pressure difference really does matter.

Yeah, the adhesive prep thing Mary mentioned. My buddy had this whole basement floor fail because he skimped on the trowel. He used this cheap notched one that was basically worn smooth. The glue looked fine when it went down, but a week later the seams were lifting everywhere. The installer he called to fix it just held up the old trowel and said 'found your problem'. He had to scrape the whole thing up.
