The day a guy in Amarillo cut my stretcher pole in half and changed my whole game
Back in 2008 I was doing a big job at a motel in Amarillo, and an old installer named Ray watched me fighting a bedroom full of berber for about an hour. He grabs my stretcher pole, takes a hacksaw to it right there on the tailgate, and cuts it down to about 18 inches. I thought he lost his mind, but he told me a short pole lets you get right up on the wall and put the power where it belongs instead of off to the side. That trick saved my knees on every stair landing and closet edge from then on. Still have that stubby pole in the truck today, wrapped in duct tape. Do you guys keep a cut down pole for tight spots or just wrestle the long one in there?
How short did y'all end up going with yours? I ask because mine is about 18 inches too and I've been thinking about taking it down even more for closets. When you get that stub short you can lay the head right against the baseboard and pull straight into the corner without the pole slapping the drywall. The trade off is you lose some reach on big open rooms, so I keep one long pole and one stub in the truck and grab whichever fits the room. That duct tape wrap is smart too, mine is bare metal and it gets slick when your hands are sweaty.
