The hallway job in Tulsa that made me stop trusting my own eyes on seams
Back in 2006 I was doing a 40 room hotel in Tulsa and I was sure my seaming iron was running right, I mean I had done hundreds of seams by then. There was this old guy named Ray doing the lobby and he watched me pull a seam in room 118 and just shook his head. He told me to run my fingers along it after it cooled and I felt a bump I swear I could not see. Turned out my iron temp was about 15 degrees off from what the dial said and the seam tape was never fully melting. Ray had a little pocket thermometer he kept in his shirt and he checked his iron twice a day, every day, for 30 years. I went out and bought one that same night for $11 at a hardware store on 11th street and it changed how I worked. Now I check heat before every job and I still think about how many seams I probably left weak before that. Anyone else had a tool lying to them for years before somebody pointed it out?
