Ditched the bank envelope system for a plain mason jar and it honestly works better
So for about two years I was doing the whole envelope thing, the fancy ones with the labels and the little velcro flap from that big box store. Last month my dog got into my work bag and chewed up three of them, so I grabbed an old pickle jar from the recycling bin and just started dropping my gas and grocery cash in there instead. Turns out having the money loose in a jar is way better for me because I can see exactly how much is left without flipping through envelopes, and I stop pretending I have more than I do. My wife thinks I'm nuts but I've gone from running out of grocery cash on the 24th to actually finishing the month with about $40 extra, two months running now. The envelopes were too easy to lie to myself with, you know? You shove a receipt in there and suddenly you don't know what's left. Anyone else switch from envelopes to something dumb and simple like a jar or a coffee can, and did it stick long term or did you go back?
The "too easy to lie to myself with" line is dead on. A jar makes the money real because you have to look at it, not slide a receipt over the truth. Simple beats fancy when fancy gives you room to cheat.
