My barber in Reno swore I'd save money going cash only, and after 5 months he was off by about $80
He cut hair for 20 years and kept telling me cards just bleed you dry, so I made the switch back in March. I pulled $300 out every two weeks and wrote down every single thing I bought in a little notebook. Turns out I spent about $80 less each month, mostly because I quit grabbing stuff online at 11pm. The weird part is I never felt broke once, since the envelope in my drawer never lies to me. Anyone else keep a paper log of what they pull out, or am I the only one still doing math with a pen?
The envelope thing works because you actually see the cash going down, not just a number on a screen. I do the same with groceries, $150 a week in an envelope and when it's gone it's gone. That one change alone killed my impulse buys at the checkout line. The online shopping at night is a real thing too, when you have to get up and find cash for it you usually just go to bed instead.
