A barista in Denver told me she hasn't touched a bill in 4 months and it got me thinking
I was grabbing coffee last Tuesday at a spot near 16th Street and the barista mentioned she hadn't handled cash in about 4 months. I asked how that worked and she shrugged and said her landlord, her grocery store, and even her weed guy all take Venmo or a card. What stuck with me was her saying she feels weird now when someone hands her a $20, like it's fake money from another time. I get the convenience angle but it bugs me that every single one of those payments has a paper trail and a company taking a cut. Does anyone else feel like we're giving up something by making cash feel strange to hold?
Wait, is it really that deep though? Cash was never some untracked freedom for most people anyway, banks still see every deposit and the IRS still knows what you make. I use Venmo and cards for almost everything now and honestly the only time it stung was when a food truck charged me a $3 "card fee" on a $9 burrito, which is more of a business being cheap than some big loss of freedom. The barista feeling weird holding a $20 is just what happens when you get used to anything, same way I feel weird writing a check now.
