Decided between cash and phone for a garage sale, wish I'd picked different
Ran a garage sale last Saturday in Tacoma and had to choose whether to take cash or set up a QR code payment thing. I went with just cash because I figured the older crowd would come, but then this couple in their 20s walked off because they had zero bills on them. I probably lost around $60 in sales over the 5 hours, and honestly the whole thing felt backwards since I pay for almost everything with my phone myself. The weird part was counting out $240 in small bills at the end and realizing how slow it made every transaction feel. Anyone else hit this wall where you want to accept cash, but the buyers just don't carry it anymore? What do you do for a middle ground that isn't a card reader rental fee?
Keep a mix. I tape a little sign to the table that says "cash or Venmo" and it works fine. Most people still have a phone even if their wallet's empty, so you get the older crowd with bills and the younger ones with the app. No fees, no reader to rent.
