Got hit with a $12 convenience fee for using my card at a local food truck

Was at the Saturday market in Austin last weekend. Found this taco truck I been wanting to try. They only took cards or phone payments. No cash at all. Charged me an extra $12 on a $30 order just for swiping. Told the guy I'd have paid cash if they took it. He just shrugged. Won't go back there again. Any of you seeing fees like that pop up more often with the no cash places?

Damn that's rough. $12 extra on a $30 order is straight up robbery. I get that card processors take a cut but most places just bake that into their prices like normal businesses instead of hitting you with a surprise fee. Food trucks already have lower overhead than brick and mortar spots so this just feels greedy. The whole "no cash" thing is getting out of hand too like cash is literally legal tender they gotta accept it. Feels like they're just trying to push people onto payment apps so they can track spending easier. I'd be pissed enough to leave a bad review honestly.

The last time I paid a $12 fee it was for a last-minute concert ticket and honestly I didn't regret it. A lot of these fees just cover the cost of having the service available, like the payment processing or the platform hosting. I get that it feels like a waste on a $5 item, but without that fee the whole thing might not even exist.
