My bank froze my account over a $12 charity donation

I set up a monthly $12 donation to a local food bank in Portland last month. No big deal, right? Well two days later my whole checking account got locked. I had to call their fraud department and sit on hold for 45 minutes just to explain that yes, I actually meant to send money to a non profit. The lady on the phone told me their algorithm flagged it because the amount was weird and the recipient was new to my history. So basically the system thinks a regular recurring donation is suspicious. What do they want me to do, only buy things from Walmart and Amazon? Has anyone else had their bank freak out over small routine payments?

Come on, you have to look at this from the bank's side. A $12 recurring payment to some random new place is exactly how fraudsters test stolen accounts. They do small, weird amounts first to see if the card works before they drain it. Your bank's algorithm flagged you for protection, not to be annoying. Sitting on hold for 45 minutes is way better than waking up to your entire paycheck gone. Plus, you set up this weird little donation without telling anyone. The bank doesn't know you from Adam, they just see a pattern that looks like a scammer warming up a stolen card. Blaming them for being careful is like blaming a car alarm for going off when someone jiggles the door handle. You should be happy they're paying attention at all.

wade250, you said "the bank doesn't know you from Adam" - but doesn't that kind of prove the problem? If their system is so trigger-happy it blocks a recurring $12 donation to a KNOWN charity like UNICEF, it's basically punishing people for being generous. I get the fraud angle, but shouldn't there be a middle ground where they verify the merchant first instead of just nuking every small payment? Like, maybe flag it with a text alert before locking the whole card, not after.

Yep, I had the same thing happen once and now I just call them ahead of time to let them know.
