PSA: my bank app showed me last month that I'd been letting auto-pay skim $23 a month for stuff I canceled in 2024
I was going through the spending breakdown on my banking app last month and saw four recurring charges I thought I had killed after a move to Denver in 2024. Two of them were small, $6.99 and $9.99. One was $4.50. Added up to about $23 a month going out with no card swiped, no cash handed over, nothing to feel. When I paid rent with a money order back in the day I at least had to walk to the store and count bills. Now it just leaves. That's the part that gets me about going cashless, not the tracking, the way it's frictionless by design. I turned on a weekly email alert for any charge over $5. Does anyone here use a separate account just for auto-pay so the leaks stay in one place?
Why not just move the auto-pay stuff to a credit card you check every week? The separate account thing sounds good on paper but now you've got two balances to watch and money sitting there doing nothing for bills that hit on different days. I did the second account for a while and honestly the alert email you already set up does more work than the account did, because the charge still has to show up somewhere before you catch it. The $4.50 ones are the sneaky part though, those slip right under a $5 alert.
