Showerthought: I had to choose between a cash gift or a direct bank transfer for my niece's birthday

My niece turned 10 last month, and I wanted to give her $50. I was stuck between putting crisp bills in a card or just sending it straight to her mom's bank app. I went with the cash, thinking it would feel more real for a kid to hold and spend. But her mom said it just sat on the counter for a week before she had to drive to the bank to deposit it, which felt like a hassle. It made me wonder if the 'magic' of cash is just nostalgia, and if digital is actually more practical now, even for kids. But then I think about her not learning to count physical money or make a small choice at a store... it's a weird trade-off. Has anyone else faced this with younger family members and found a good middle ground?

Used to think cash was the only way for kids to learn about money. Then I saw my nephew get a digital transfer and his mom helped him split it right there, some to save and some to spend online on a game he really wanted. The instant talk about budgeting felt way more real than a bill in an envelope. Changed my whole view on what's actually useful for them.

Ha, my old-school cash jars feel so outdated now.

Yeah, that bit about the cash just sitting on the counter is so real. I mean, it's a total hassle for the parent. But I get why you wanted the physical money for her.
