Showerthought: My card got frozen on a Tuesday and I couldn't even buy a coffee

The bank flagged a $12 lunch as 'suspicious' and locked my account for 6 hours, so I had zero money. Has anyone else felt totally powerless when a system decides you can't spend your own cash?

Banks have a duty to protect your money from real fraud, which is a massive problem. That small lunch charge might have matched a pattern of theft they see every day. The six hour lock is a minor hassle compared to the weeks it can take to recover stolen funds. These systems, while annoying, exist because actual criminals are constantly trying to empty accounts.

Yeah, but "a minor hassle" feels like a big deal when you're stuck at the register...

Ugh, but @marydavis is right, that hassle ruins your whole day.

Wait, SIX hours? @maxf33 I just saw your post and I'm honestly shocked. That's not a minor hassle, that's a whole afternoon shot. Imagine sitting in the car, already late for work, and your card is just locked for the entire school day? My bank once froze my account for a $2 coffee because I bought gas in a different town that morning, and they unlocked it in 20 minutes after I called. But six hours for a lunch charge sounds like someone at the bank hit "snooze" on a Monday morning. That would drive me up a wall too.
