Smartphone wallet failed me at a farmers market in Portland

I was at the farmers market last Saturday trying to buy two bunches of kale for $4.50, but when I tapped my phone to pay, the terminal kept saying 'declined' because my bank app needed a re-login I couldn't do without wifi. I ended up digging through my car for 10 minutes to find $5 in coins I forgot I had. How do you handle situations where your digital payment method just decides to stop working?

Man, that's rough. Nothing like being stranded over some kale, I feel your pain. I carry a crumpled twenty in my phone case now just for that exact reason.

Kale almost cost you your dignity, huh? I keep a soggy $5 bill stuffed in my glove compartment specifically for moments when my phone decides to become a fancy paperweight. At least you got a free car scavenger hunt out of the deal, that's practically a Portland workout.
