Yeah a $200 set is basically just a block of disappointment waiting to happen.

The real issue with those cheaper blocks isn't even the knives themselves. Its the fact that people buy them thinking they're getting a deal and then never bother learning how to actually use a decent knife. Good technique matters way more than the price tag. You can do more damage with a sharp cheap knife than a dull expensive one if you know what you're doing. The middle ground is where its at, find a solid $50 knife and a cheap stone.

Maybe you're overthinking this a bit @ross.lily. A lot of people just want to chop an onion without making a whole philosophy out of it. If the knife works well enough and they're not hurting themselves, does the technique really matter that much in day to day life?
