Just wasted 45 minutes trying to open a #10 can of tomatoes with a butter knife

The can opener broke mid-service at the diner last night, and I figured I'd just pry the lid off like a caveman. 45 minutes later, I had tomato juice all over my apron and the lid was barely dented. Ended up using the backup can opener from the basement storage, which took about 10 seconds. Has anyone else had a kitchen tool fail at the worst possible moment?

You try using a pair of pliers next time?

Yeah, "you try using a pair of pliers next time" got me thinking... it's funny how the simplest fix gets overlooked until someone spells it out. I notice this all the time in everyday life - people jump straight to the complicated solution when a basic tool or method would work just fine. Like how everyone wants to buy a new gadget for a problem when a bit of elbow grease and common sense does the trick. @reese_lee9, you're right that we overthink stuff... it's like we forget the old ways work. I keep a multi-tool in my truck for this exact reason, saves me hours of frustration. Just a reminder that sometimes the answer is simpler than we make it.

Has your friend ever fixed something super obvious and felt like a genius? Mine tried to unclog a sink with a fancy chemical once, ended up with a mess that took hours to clean. Next time, a simple plunger did the job in two minutes, and he was kicking himself.
